12 burnt beyond recognition in Ilorin-Ogbomoso road crash

An accident, involving a white 18-seater Toyota Hiace passenger bus and a DAF truck on Saturday claimed the lives of 12 passengers on the Ilorin/Ogbomoso road.

The accident occurred at about 7am in Kwara State section of the road when the bus, heading to Lagos had a head on collision with the truck and immediately went up in flames as a result of the impact and with the passengers trapped inside.

However, six of the 18 passengers were lucky, as they were able to escape with varying degrees of injuries.

Kwara State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Jonathan Owoade, confirmed the accident.

“Twelve of the passengers were burnt beyond recognition.

“We are still at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) trying to sort out the process of depositing them at the morgue.

“But those injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment,” he said.

Owoade said investigation into the accident has started but said speed limit and route violations were being suspected to be the immediate cause.
