The Oyo State Police Command has rescued 19 Ghanaian nationals from a suspected human trafficking syndicate operating in Ibadan, the state capital.
The rescue was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Adewale Osifeso, who said the victims—14 men and five women—were lured to Nigeria under the guise of employment opportunities.
According to the statement, the victims, mostly young adults, were deceived by unidentified traffickers and subsequently exploited for financial gain. The operation followed credible intelligence about suspicious activity at a building located in the Kajorepo area of Akinyele Local Government Area.
Acting on the tip-off, operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), supported by tactical teams, stormed the premises, which was found locked from the outside. Upon gaining access, the officers discovered and rescued the 19 individuals held inside.
“During the operation, 19 individuals—14 men and five women—all Ghanaian nationals—were rescued,” the police said.
The statement added that the victims have been cooperating with the authorities by providing critical information to assist ongoing investigations. They have since been handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further profiling and possible repatriation.
The police reiterated their commitment to dismantling the trafficking ring and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
They also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through emergency hotlines.
