A 200-level male student of the University of Ilorin in Kwara State has reportedly committed suicide due to the economic hardships facing his family.
Sources indicate that the deceased, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, was from the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS). He was maintaining a cumulative GPA of 4.5 in the Department of Mass Communication prior to his tragic death.
The incident reportedly occurred at his private residence located in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke community, Ilorin, Kwara State.
University community sources mentioned that the student took his own life due to financial challenges that prevented him from meeting his basic needs.
It was noted that he lost his father a few years ago, and since then, his mother, a retired school teacher, has been responsible for his academic expenses.
The deceased’s financial difficulties reportedly began when he resumed school last year, prompting his colleagues to raise funds to cover his tuition fees and provide food supplies.
Unfortunately, last weekend, the student ingested a poisonous substance shortly after his roommate left for lectures. He left a note for his roommate explaining his inability to cope with his financial situation as the reason for his suicide.
His roommate raised the alarm upon returning from lectures.
A senior administrative officer in the university, who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident to journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday. He described the situation as shocking, stating that it has plunged the university and its students into a state of mourning.
