2025 CAF Awards: Super Falcons remain Africa’s best

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team reaffirmed their dominance in African football after being named the Women’s National Team of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards held on Wednesday in Morocco.

The Super Falcons edged past strong contenders Morocco and South Africa, who finished second and third respectively at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Nigeria clinched their 10th African title in dramatic fashion earlier this year, staging an incredible comeback from two goals down to seal a thrilling 3–2 victory over hosts Morocco in the WAFCON final.

They won five of their six games, with a 0–0 draw against Algeria in the group stage the only dent on their record at the competition.

The win also saw the West African giants retain the prestigious award they claimed in 2024, a year that marked their return to the women’s football tournament at the Paris Olympics.

With momentum on their side, Justine Madugu’s team remains the favourite heading into the next WAFCON, set to take place once again in Morocco next year.

Head coach Madugu now has a two-year extension to tinker with the team ahead of the WAFCON, with the chance of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
