2025 Remo Day: Akpabio urges unity for Ijebu-Remo State

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has urged the people of Remoland to deepen unity and cooperation with their Ijebu kinsmen in pursuit of the proposed Ijebu-Remo State, stressing that harmony is critical to achieving the shared aspiration.
Akpabio made the call at the 2025 Remo Day celebration held at the Akarigbo Pavilion in Sagamu, themed “One People, Diverse Cultures, One Identity.” He described the Remo people as industrious and enterprising, noting that their collaborative spirit would be central to the realisation of the new state.
“I want the Remo people to continue to live in peace and work closely with the Ijebu people towards the creation of Ijebu State,” the Senate President said, assuring that the National Assembly would support the initiative while emphasising that the state capital must be located in a peaceful environment.
He said Remo Day goes beyond cultural celebration, serving as a platform for reflection, strategic thinking and nation-building. According to him, Nigeria’s diversity should be embraced as a strength, adding that his presence at the event symbolised national unity across ethnic lines.
Akpabio also assured Nigerians that insecurity would soon be addressed, commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for taking bold steps to tackle security and economic challenges. He pledged the continued collaboration of the Senate with other arms of government and praised Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his infrastructural achievements, particularly the Gateway International Airport.
In his remarks, Governor Abiodun described Remoland as a land of illustrious sons and daughters whose contributions have shaped Ogun State and Nigeria. He said the large turnout at the event highlighted the unifying power of culture and warned that societies that abandon their roots risk losing their identity.
The governor highlighted key projects executed in Remoland, including the Sagamu–Iperu–Ode–Sapaade Road, and announced that international cargo operations would commence at the Gateway International Airport next month. He said the development would boost logistics, create jobs and position Remo as a major agro-processing and export hub in West Africa.
Earlier, the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, said Remo Day was instituted to celebrate and project Remo culture globally. He reaffirmed the people’s commitment to preserving their heritage and working with stakeholders toward the actualisation of the proposed Ijebu-Remo State, while appreciating the governor for partnering in the construction of the palace pavilion.
