As part of its ongoing social intervention programme, the Lagos State Government has earmarked N1.6 billion to support vulnerable residents ahead of the 2025 Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The initiative, tagged “Sanwo-Olu Listens,” has so far disbursed a total of N2.461 billion to 8,690 beneficiaries over the last four years, according to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Tajudeen Afolabi.
Speaking during a ministerial press briefing to mark the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office, held at Alausa, Ikeja, Dr. Afolabi noted that the programme continues to serve as a beacon of hope for the indigent population in Lagos.
“Mr. Governor has been supporting this programme since its launch in 2020. As at now, 8,690 beneficiaries have benefited. We are currently conducting verification for a new set of beneficiaries, who will soon be called to receive their cheques,” he said.
He explained that the N2.461 billion figure represents the total disbursement so far, with further interventions already in progress for 2024. “The 2025 beneficiaries have not yet been captured,” he added.
Dr. Afolabi disclosed that the newly approved N1.6 billion allocation will ensure hundreds of indigent residents receive financial support in the coming weeks to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir with dignity. “I can assure you, it is going to be wonderful,” he said.
Highlighting other social support initiatives, Dr. Afolabi also reported progress in the Mother, Infant and Child Development (MICHD) programme, which has assisted 6,280 indigent pregnant women with nutritional support. Initially launched in 2021 at Public Health Centres (PHCs), the initiative has now expanded to all six health districts across the state to reach more beneficiaries.
“By ensuring these expectant mothers have access to the nutritious food they need, the State Government is not just supporting them, but also securing the future of Lagos,” he added.
Dr. Afolabi expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat for their continued support, affirming that the Office remains committed to building a civically responsible and inclusive society where every resident’s voice is heard.
