2026 WCQ: South Africa picks Bloemfontein stadium for Super Eagles clash

By Tosin Omojola –
South Africa has officially announced Bloemfontein as the venue for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
The crucial Group C matchday eight encounter is scheduled for September 9 at the iconic Toyota Stadium, a 46,000-capacity arena formerly known as Vodacom Park and Free State Stadium. The match could prove decisive in determining which team secures qualification for the global tournament, depending on earlier group results.
Before travelling to South Africa, the Super Eagles will host the Amavubi of Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, September 6. Both fixtures are pivotal in shaping the group’s final standings, as only the top team qualifies automatically for the World Cup.
South Africa currently leads the group with 13 points and remains in strong contention for qualification, while Nigeria sits in fourth place with seven points and must win all remaining matches to keep their hopes alive.
The encounter in Bloemfontein is expected to reignite the long-standing football rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa. Their most recent meeting, in June 2024 in Uyo, ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw.
Fans are anticipating a charged atmosphere in Bloemfontein, where home supporters will rally behind Bafana Bafana as they edge closer to securing a World Cup slot.
The pressure is particularly high for the Super Eagles, who missed out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Another failure to qualify would be a significant blow to a nation with deep footballing traditions and high expectations.
