2027: Nigerians want survival, not ethnic politics-Adebayo

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has declared that the party will not engage in ethnic politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that Nigerians are more concerned about economic survival than regional identity.
Adebayo made the statement during a media interview shortly after emerging as the SDP’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election, stressing that the party’s campaign would focus on addressing the economic hardship facing millions of Nigerians.
According to him, the SDP is committed to policies that prioritise education, healthcare, job creation and social welfare, describing the party as one built around the needs of ordinary citizens struggling with rising living costs.
“We don’t think like that in SDP. A hungry person in the South West is still hungry. Someone buying petrol at outrageous prices won’t care about regional identity,” Adebayo said while dismissing ethnic considerations in national politics.
He added that Nigerians wake up daily thinking about how to feed their families, pay transport fares, access healthcare and secure decent education and employment opportunities, insisting that such concerns should dominate political discourse.
The SDP flag bearer also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party of placing greater emphasis on winning elections than improving the welfare of citizens. He argued that social democratic governance requires leaders to carefully consider the impact of economic policies on ordinary people.
“A social democrat won’t wake up and remove subsidy without thinking about the impact on transport, food, housing, jobs and people’s savings. But if you are APC, your focus is on winning elections and congratulating yourselves afterward,” he stated.
On education, Adebayo condemned recent policy changes in the sector, describing them as a deliberate lowering of standards. He further stated that he is not intimidated by the prospect of contesting against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election despite both politicians coming from the South-West region.
