2027: Ogun PDP moves to unite members, sets up Elders’ Advisory Council

Ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun state, the main opposition party in the State, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has initiated moves to reconcile all aggrieved members as it constituted an advisory council to be led by Pa Reuben ogunnaike.

The party at its state secretariat in Abeokuta, inaugurated an Elders’ Advisory Council aimed at fostering unity and strengthening the party.

Speaking at the event, the state chairman of the party, Abayomi Tella, described the formation of the elders’ council as a crucial step in repositioning the party.

He emphasised that its primary mandate would be to mediate disputes, reconcile aggrieved members, and restore harmony within the party.

The former chairman of the party, Sikirulaih Ogundele and ex-deputy governorship candidate of the PDP in the 2023 election, Abudulkabir Akinlade had dragged the party to court to challenge the congress that brought in the Tella-led executive.

Tella said despite the crisis within the party, the PDP was determined to emerge stronger and more united.

Tella said, “This organ is very important that the party constitution recognises it. We all know where our party is today and we cannot do it alone, we need the wisdom and support of our elders.

“For now, we will still continue to talk to ourselves. We will give that room and ensure that we embrace peace, we will do all of this up to the level that the constitution allows us, but that does not show that my executive committee is weak, if you think you can just come in and rubbish the party or the executive committee, we will deal with you as provided in the constitution.

“We trying to create room for peaceful reconciliation should not be taken as weakness, so if there is a need to punish erring members we will do.”

Also speaking, Adekoya urged party members to embrace peace and unity, stressing that internal crises had, in the past, cost the party significant political opportunities.

Adekoya who represented Ijebu North, Ijebu East and Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency at the national assembly said, the state should expect a more cohesive and united opposition party “because PDP has no excuse not to take the people of the state out of this trouble they are.”
