The Ondo State Police Command has detained a 53-year-old man, Omowole Ikulala, over the alleged murder of a 77-year-old farmer, Boboye Iwasanmi, in Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred at Oligbe Farm Settlement, where the elderly farmer was found dead with injuries suspected to have been inflicted with a machete.
According to police sources, the victim’s wife, Veronica, raised the alarm after returning from fetching water and discovering that her husband was missing.
She reportedly searched for him and later found him on the farm, lying in a pool of blood, prompting her to alert the police.
Following the report, police personnel visited the scene and evacuated the deceased’s remains to the State Specialist Hospital Mortuary in Okitipupa for preservation.
Meanwhile, the command’s spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed Ikulala’s arrest but did not disclose details of the suspect’s alleged connection to the killing.
“The police have arrested Ikulala in connection with the incident and he is currently assisting with the investigation,” Jimoh said, adding that detectives attached to the homicide section had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
He further said the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, had directed that the case be thoroughly investigated, while the command urged members of the public with useful information to cooperate with investigators as efforts continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the farmer’s death and prosecute any suspect found culpable.
