The Osun State Police Command has confirmed that seven policemen were shot during a violent communal clash between the Ido-Ijesa and Esa-Oke communities over a chieftaincy dispute.

The incident occurred following Governor Ademola Adeleke’s approval of the appointment of Prince Timileyin Ajayi as the Olojudo of Ido-Ajegunle, a neighboring community to Esa-Oke.

However, the decision was met with opposition from residents of Esa-Oke, who argue that the newly appointed monarch is an indigene of Ilesa.

Tension escalated when vigilantes brought in by the new monarch were arrested by the police four days ago.

The Osun State Police Command, through its spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident, stating: “Police operatives have been deployed to restore peace. Seven policemen were shot when they first arrived at the community.”

“When we heard that there was a crisis in the community, we deployed our men to the area, but they were ambushed. The policemen were trying to clear trees that had fallen on their path when they were ambushed. A bullet hit one of them in the neck.”
