‘I never doubted his sincerity or patriotism’ – Babangida pays glowing tribute to Buhari

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a sincere patriot, principled leader, and brother-in-arms whose legacy will endure in Nigeria’s history.

In a statement released on Sunday, Babangida said the news of Buhari’s passing came as a heavy blow, recalling their shared beginnings in 1962 when they both enrolled at the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna.

“From those early days, Muhammadu stood out — quiet yet resolute, principled yet humble, deeply patriotic and fiercely loyal to Nigeria,” Babangida wrote. “Through the years, we shared trenches and trials, dreams and disappointments, victories and moments of reflection.”

He praised Buhari’s unwavering commitment to the ideals of service, discipline, and national duty, noting that even when their careers placed them in leadership under vastly different circumstances, Buhari remained consistent in character and values.

“In all, Buhari remained steadfast in his belief in integrity, order, and the dignity of public office,” he said. “He served Nigeria with a deep sense of responsibility, even when the road was lonely or misunderstood.”

Babangida also described Buhari as a spiritual and humble man, guided by faith and conviction. “We may not have agreed on everything — as brothers often don’t — but I never once doubted his sincerity or his patriotism.”

He described Buhari’s death as a loss not just of a statesman, but of a national symbol. “Even in retirement, he remained a moral compass to many and an example of modesty in public life.”

Extending condolences to the late President’s wife, Aisha Buhari, his children, grandchildren, and the Nigerian people, Babangida prayed: “May Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy, forgive his shortcomings, accept his deeds, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”
