Despite missing out on World Cup, Super Eagles climb in FIFA rankings

Nigeria maintained a steady climb in the latest FIFA men’s rankings released today, despite being eliminated from the FIFA World Cup Qualifying Playoffs.

The Super Eagles rose three places from the October rankings to 38th in the world and 5th in Africa.

During the FIFA international window considered for the latest rankings, Nigeria defeated Gabon 4-1 in the semi-final of the World Cup Qualifying Playoffs before losing 3-4 on penalties to DR Congo after a 1-1 draw in normal and extra time in the final.

Despite the World Cup elimination, Nigeria garnered 1,502 points to secure their current positions in the world and African rankings.

Ahead of Nigeria in Africa are Morocco in 1st place (11th in the world), Senegal in 2nd (19th globally), Egypt in 3rd (34th), and Algeria in 4th (35th).

Nigeria is the only team among the top five African rankings not headed to the 2026 World Cup.

Globally, Spain, Argentina, France, England, and Brazil occupy the top five positions, respectively.
