BREAKING: Ekiti sacks surgeon, suspends others over alleged kidney removal at EKSUTH

By Boye Oyeyemi –
The Ekiti State Government has ordered the immediate dismissal of a surgeon and the suspension of other members of a surgical team at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital following allegations of unlawful kidney removal.
The directive followed the submission of a report by a seven-member panel of enquiry set up to investigate claims by Mr Joshua Afolayan regarding a surgical procedure carried out on him at the teaching hospital.
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani, disclosed the government’s decision in a statement issued after receiving the report of the panel, which was chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile.
According to the government, the surgeon who had primary responsibility for the operation has been dismissed with immediate effect, while all members of the surgical team present in the theatre on the day of the procedure have been suspended for one month, pending further administrative review.

The state government also approved the recommendation to cover the full cost of a new kidney transplant for Afolayan and to take responsibility for his post-transplant care and related medical maintenance for two years.
It further directed a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments within EKSUTH to strengthen clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety at the facility.
While reaffirming confidence in the dedicated health professionals at the hospital, the government pledged decisive action against breaches of professional standards and assured residents of reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in the state’s health system.
