By Boye Oyeyemi –
Gunmen on Saturday attacked a police checkpoint at Ipele Junction in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, injuring two police officers and a female civilian.
The incident occurred while operatives attached to the Safer Highway Patrol were carrying out routine checks at the checkpoint.
Police sources said about three gunmen, who arrived on a motorcycle, suddenly opened fire on the officers at close range.
Two policemen were reportedly shot during the attack, while a woman, identified as Taiwo, was hit by stray bullets.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Kazeem, said the officers were attacked while discharging their lawful duties, adding that the patrol team repelled the assailants, forcing them to flee.
“All the injured victims were promptly taken to the hospital and are currently receiving medical care,” Kazeem stated.
He disclosed that one suspect, identified as Nwabali, was arrested at the scene, while the motorcycle used by the attackers was recovered, noting that the suspect was providing useful information to aid the arrest of the others.
Reacting, the state commissioner of police, CP Adebowale Lawal, described the attack as “tragic and condemnable,” while commending the officers for their swift response, which he said prevented further casualties.
