Daka’s last-gasp strike rescues point for Zambia against Mali

Patson Daka delivered a dramatic late twist as Zambia snatched a 1-1 draw against Mali in their opening Group A clash at the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday.
Mali looked set for all three points after Lassine Sinayoko fired them ahead in the 62nd minute, capitalising on defensive lapses to finish from close range.
That goal came after Zambia goalkeeper Willard Mwanza had already kept his side alive, saving El Bilal Touré’s first-half penalty following a VAR review.
For long spells, Mali were on top. Dorgeles Nene tormented Zambia down the left, while Sinayoko and Touré stretched the defence and created chances that suggested a comfortable win was imminent.
But Zambia refused to fold. As Mali dropped deeper, pressure mounted, and in stoppage time it finally told.
Mathews Banda swung in a teasing cross, and Daka rose bravely, powering a diving header into the net two minutes beyond regulation to spark wild celebrations.
It was a classic late smash-and-grab and a reminder of Zambia’s fighting spirit. Mali next face hosts Morocco, while Zambia turn their attention to Comoros, both sides now knowing that nothing comes easy at AFCON.
