The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old woman, Nafisat Lateef, over the alleged poisoning of a three-year-old boy in the Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal.
According to the statement, the incident was reported on Wednesday at the Odigbo Police Division by the victim’s mother, Rofiyat, a 32-year-old resident of the Omifon community in Odigbo.
The police said the incident allegedly occurred on Tuesday at about 8:30 am when the suspect, said to be the complainant’s landlady, gave the child, identified as Abdulrasheed, a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous following a misunderstanding.
It was stated that shortly after taking the substance, the child began vomiting and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received medical attention.
The command added that detectives swiftly arrested the suspect and recovered the suspected liquid substance, noting that she is currently in custody and has made useful statements, while investigation continues.
The commissioner of police warned residents to avoid landlord-tenant disputes, saying such disagreements often escalate into criminal acts, and assured the public of the command’s commitment to ensuring justice and public safety across the state.
