Newly elected Oloja of Lagos, Jide Kosoko, has released the trailer of his debut cinema production, Oba Esugbayi, ahead of its theatrical release.

The legendary actor took to his social media page to announce the release of the production, captioning the post: “Something ancient is rising… Eleko – Oba Esugbayi… Ramadan blessings, Lenten reflections, one people, one history.”

The movie, produced by Jide Kosoko and directed by Adebayo Tijana, Tunde Olaoye and Babatunde Kosoko, is an epic biographical film about King Esugbayi, narrating the travails of the people as the king resisted colonialism. It explores themes of power, pride and colonialism.

The movie features a star-studded cast, including Jide Kosoko, Jumoke Odetola, Femi Adebayo, Femi Branch and Sola Kosoko, among others. Its nationwide cinematic release is expected on March 20, 2026.

Oba Esugbayi Eleko was the son of Oba Dosunmu and ruled Lagos from 1901 to 1932. His defiance of British authority led to a major political and legal crisis in the Lagos Colony, resulting in his deposition and deportation to Oyo between 1925 and 1930. However, he was reinstated as king in 1931 and ruled for another year.

His struggles and legal victory over the British colonial government symbolised the resistance between indigenous rights and colonial rule in Nigeria.
