The Chairman of Akoko South-West Local Government Area, Hon. Ayo Ajana, was on Monday reportedly manhandled during the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary election held in Ward 14, Oba-Akoko, Ondo State.

The incident, which occurred at the venue of the exercise, was said to have caused tension and momentary disruption of the electoral process as party members and security presence struggled to restore order.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the media aide to the LGA Chairman, Momoh Jawad Oladeji, and made available to journalists.

The statement read: “The events that occurred today during the APC direct primary election in Oba Akoko Ward 14 are unfortunate and have raised concerns about the conduct of the exercise.”

“What was intended to be a peaceful democratic process was disrupted by rising tension, which led to some disorder at the venue and temporarily affected the smooth conduct of the election.”

“In the course of the incident, Hon. Ayo Ajana was manhandled and whisked away from the scene to prevent further escalation and being lynched.”

The statement further condemned any form of violence or intimidation, stressing that internal party contests should be conducted in line with democratic principles and decorum.

It also urged party members and supporters to remain calm and allow party leadership and relevant authorities to properly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
