Governor Seyi Makinde has confirmed the abduction of seven teachers following a deadly attack by suspected terrorists and bandits on Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The governor also confirmed that one of the abducted teachers has been killed by the attackers.
Makinde made the disclosure during a late-night press briefing in Ibadan after a high-level security review meeting, noting that government forces are intensifying rescue operations across affected communities.
He said the state had deployed a joint task force made up of the military, police, Amotekun Corps, local hunters, and intelligence agencies to track the attackers and rescue the victims.
According to him, security operatives encountered improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by the abductors during the operation, leading to casualties among some operatives.
Makinde said wounded personnel, including members of Amotekun, soldiers, and local vigilantes, are receiving treatment and the government would cover their medical care.
He explained that six suspects have been arrested within the locality, believed to be informants or logistics supporters for the attackers, while three other persons of interest were also picked up by another security outfit.
The governor added that the exact number of abducted pupils is still being verified due to confusion during the attack, but confirmed that seven teachers were taken. He also assured residents that the government would provide daily updates on the rescue operation and would not relent until all victims are rescued safely.
