NFVCB wins WHO special award for tobacco control advocacy in Nigeria

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has been honoured with the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General’s Special Award for the African Region in recognition of its efforts in tobacco control advocacy and the promotion of responsible media content in Nigeria.
The award, presented as part of activities commemorating World No Tobacco Day, saw the NFVCB emerge as the only institution among the five African Region recipients recognised by the WHO.
The recognition follows the Board’s 2024 regulations banning the promotion and glamorisation of tobacco and nicotine products in films, music videos, skits, and other audiovisual content. The regulations also require health warnings on any necessary depiction of tobacco use, mandate 18+ audience restrictions, and compel producers to disclose ties with the tobacco and nicotine industry.
Speaking on the recognition on Wednesday, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NFVCB, Shuaibu Husseini, described the award as a major validation of the Board’s efforts to protect public health through responsible storytelling.
“The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has been honoured with the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General’s Special Award in the African Region for outstanding contributions to tobacco control advocacy and the promotion of responsible media content in Nigeria.”
“The NFVCB is the only institution among the five-person African Region winners unveiled as part of activities commemorating World No Tobacco Day.”
“The goal has never been to censor art, but to ensure that our films do not inadvertently market products that are harmful to public health.”
“This award and recognition is a validation of the Board’s efforts toward promoting responsible storytelling and safeguarding public interest.”
