UNIOSUN rewards WAUG medal winners with tuition fee discounts

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

The Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Professor Clement Adebooye, has announced tuition discounts for students who represented the institution at the recently concluded West African University Games (WAUG), with medal winners paying 50 per cent of their fees and other participants paying 60 per cent.

Adebooye also disclosed that the university planned to provide sporting facilities similar to those at its main campus at its campuses in Ikire and Okuku to encourage greater student participation in sports.

Speaking while receiving the university’s representatives at the games alongside members of the Osun State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Adebooye said the initiative reflected the institution’s commitment to recognising excellence and rewarding student-athletes.

“Those who won medals for the university will only pay 50 per cent of their school fees, while those who didn’t win medals but participated will pay 60 per cent,” he said.

He urged the university’s Sports Directorate to identify promising athletes among newly admitted students early enough to strengthen the institution’s performance in future competitions.

UNIOSUN presented 18 athletes at the games, winning six silver and 10 bronze medals in events including taekwondo, track and field, javelin, lawn tennis and chess.

Earlier, the Acting Director of Sports, Dr Tesleem Kolawole, commended the vice-chancellor for his consistent support for sporting activities and prompt approval of the university’s participation in the competition. He added that the new stadium complex had made camping easier and more comfortable for coaches and athletes preparing for competitions.

The Vice-Chairman of SWAN in Osun State, Oluwaseun Omolola, also praised Adebooye’s commitment to sports development, describing the university’s stadium complex as a standout project among Nigerian higher institutions. He urged the university to sustain its investment in sports and pledged SWAN’s support in promoting its sporting achievements.
