A 21-year-old mathematics graduate from Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Francis Olusegun, has made history at the University of Ilorin by graduating with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.00, becoming the institution’s first student to achieve the feat in its 51-year history.

Olusegun emerged as the overall best graduating student for the 2025/2026 academic session after completing his studies in the university’s Department of Mathematics. His achievement has attracted widespread attention since the institution announced the news a few weeks ago.

The outstanding graduate was honoured on the third day of the university’s convocation ceremony, alongside other distinguished graduands. The event attracted prominent dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad.

Also present was the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who was represented by his deputy, Kayode Alabi, alongside other government officials and special guests who celebrated Olusegun’s exceptional academic achievement.

Speaking in an earlier interview, Olusegun attributed his outstanding performance to a personal structure that guided his decisions and helped him remain focused on his long-term academic goals.

He explained that his study routine was flexible rather than tied to a rigid timetable, adding that he regularly adjusted his reading methods whenever he discovered that a particular approach was no longer effective.

According to him, maintaining focus on his goals and adapting his study strategies were central to his academic success. His achievement marks a significant milestone for the university, which was established in 1975.

Looking ahead, Olusegun said he intends to pursue a master’s degree abroad and may subsequently proceed to doctoral studies. He is particularly interested in Mathematical Biology and Mathematical Epidemiology, fields that apply mathematical techniques to biological processes, infectious diseases and public health challenges.
