Spanish police probes death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel

Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the death of CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel, who died at the age of 30 after a horrific on-field collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono.

According to reports by Spanish broadcaster RTVE and news agency EFE, cited by the Associated Press (AP), the investigation is aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the footballer’s death.

The incident occurred during Monday’s Spanish second-division encounter when Owono rushed out of his goal to challenge De Miguel for the ball, with the goalkeeper’s knee making contact with the forward.

Owono was immediately shown a red card following the collision, while De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to hospital, where he died on Tuesday morning.

The case is now under judicial investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether any offence was committed.

However, the opening of an investigation does not mean Owono has been formally charged or found guilty of any wrongdoing.
