AAUA Students’ Union shifts secretariat to main gate after fatal truck accident

The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) Students’ Union has temporarily moved its Secretariat to the university’s main gate following a fatal truck accident near the campus on Wednesday night.

In a statement signed by the union’s president, Comrade Salami Akeem (Ologbon), and general secretary, Comrade Bakare Jamiu Abiodun (Unique), the union said the relocation is aimed at improving coordination of safety measures and providing support to the affected community.

The union described the crash, caused by a heavy-duty truck that lost control and broke through barricades, as a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives, including students of the university.

It noted that prior efforts were made in collaboration with local authorities, including the Alale’s Palace, to secure the Akungba-Ikare route and prevent such accidents, stressing that the tragedy exposed persistent risks in the area.

The Union also refuted claims linking it to the reopening of the blocked route, calling such allegations “unfounded and misleading”.

Comrade Akeem urged government authorities to enforce a permanent restriction on heavy-duty trucks in the area and ensure justice for the victims, describing the incident as a major blow to the student community.

The Students’ Union extended condolences to the families of those who died, including a 200-level Library and Information Science student, and reassured the university community of its continued commitment to student safety while operating from the temporary Secretariat at the main gate.
