Accumulated cards put Osimhen, other Eagles in suspension danger

Nigeria could face a major setback in its quest for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as key Super Eagles players risk missing the intercontinental playoff due to accumulated yellow cards.
Striker Victor Osimhen, defender Calvin Bassey, and six other regulars are in danger of suspension if Nigeria secures a spot in the inter-confederation playoff in March 2026.
The Super Eagles booked their place in the African playoff final on Thursday with a commanding 4-1 victory over Gabon and will face DR Congo in Sunday’s final.
Under FIFA rules, yellow cards are carried forward until just before the World Cup. Any player who accumulates two yellow cards across different qualifying matches automatically serves a suspension in the next match. This means key Nigerian players could miss the intercontinental playoff should the team advance.
Currently, Frank Onyeka, backup goalkeeper Amas Obasogie, and Osimhen—who received a yellow card for removing his shirt during his first goal celebration—each have one yellow card.
Other players already carrying yellow cards from the first-round group phase include Stanley Nwabali, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Tolu Arokodare, and Bruno Onyemaechi.
If any of these eight players are booked in Sunday’s final, they will miss the opening match of the inter-confederation playoffs in March 2026, assuming Nigeria qualifies.
