Acting CoAS mourns Lagbaja, lauds President Tinubu’s efforts to save him
Newly appointed acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, on Wednesday, paid tribute to his predecessor, Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away following a prolonged battle with an undisclosed illness. Lagbaja, who was 56, served as a dedicated and selfless leader, deeply committed to Nigeria’s security and welfare, Oluyede said.
Oluyede disclosed that President Bola Tinubu made extensive efforts to secure Lagbaja’s recovery, even while the general received medical treatment abroad.
“The entire army is in a sorrowful mood after losing our leader,” Oluyede told reporters in Abuja. “Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, everything possible was done for him to be alive with us today.”
Reflecting on Lagbaja’s dedication, Oluyede described him as “courageous, thorough, and a true professional,” whose commitment to the Nigerian Army was unwavering. “He was someone that gave his all to Nigeria,” he added. “He was a selfless leader, very passionate about Nigeria, and he led the Nigerian Army very well. It’s a big loss to us.”
Oluyede, who was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general during Lagbaja’s absence, urged Nigerians to honor the late army chief’s legacy. “I want Nigerians to actually celebrate him for the good work he did,” he said, expressing hope that Lagbaja’s contributions would inspire future generations.
The acting chief concluded by praying for the repose of Lagbaja’s soul, commending his devotion to the country and expressing condolences to his family and the Nigerian military.
