ADC considers consensus option for 2027 Presidential ticket

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it is considering adopting a consensus method to select its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election as part of efforts to reduce costs and strengthen internal unity.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, disclosed this during an appearance on One-on-One, a programme on Arise Television on Saturday.

He explained that the party is weighing two options permitted under the amended Electoral Act—direct primaries and consensus—but ruled out indirect primaries.

According to Abdullahi, the consensus approach remains the party’s preferred option.

“We are trying as much as possible to adopt the consensus approach because that is the least costly for us. For us, the best-case scenario is to be able to engineer consensus and that’s what we are working on,” he said.

Abdullahi also took aim at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that the party’s cohesion is largely dependent on the influence of President Bola Tinubu.

“If you take power out of APC, APC is actually nothing. I know the party well,” he said.

He further claimed that the party could face internal challenges after Tinubu’s tenure, describing the president as the central figure holding the party together.
