ADC expresses concern over lack of Obi–Atiku alliance ahead of 2027 elections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed concern over the absence of collaboration between former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, as political alignments begin to form ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, raised the issue on Friday while speaking on The Morning Show, a programme aired on Arise Television, where he was asked to comment on the failure of both politicians to work together ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Abdullahi said while the situation may not amount to a major threat to Nigeria’s democracy, it nonetheless presents a challenge that political stakeholders should take seriously.

He described the lack of cooperation between the two opposition figures as a “conundrum” and a matter of concern for the ADC, particularly in the context of opposition unity ahead of future elections.

The ADC spokesperson, however, clarified that the party is not currently engaged in discussions about presidential tickets or potential flagbearers for 2027.

According to him, the party’s immediate priority is to strengthen its internal structures and expand its presence across the country.

Abdullahi said the ADC is focused on establishing a solid footing nationwide to enable it to effectively participate in elections in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

He added that building a functional and competitive political structure remains the party’s main objective at this stage, rather than engaging in early permutations over presidential ambitions.
