Adegboyega Awomolo becomes new chairman of Body of Benchers

Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) is now the new Chairman of the Body of Benchers, the body governing the legal profession in Nigeria. 

He succeeds Justice Mary Odili whose tenure has ended. 

The change of power took place on Thursday at the meeting of the Body of Benchers.

Speaking at the event, Chief Awomolo credited his appointment to the goodwill and dedication of members of the legal profession to preserving the rule of law.

He acknowledges the tasks the Body of Benchers must complete, especially the proposed changes to the Legal Practitioners Act and the Nigerian Constitution.

The Body of Benchers also appointed six of its members as Life Benchers. They are Justice C. N. Uwa of the Supreme Court, Chief Emeka Ngige (SAN), Chairman of the Council of Legal Education, and former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Mr. Paul Usoro (SAN). Others are Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and Mr. Mela Nunghe (SAN)
