Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has admitted that the club is yet to find a replacement for Nigerian international Ademola Lookman, following the Super Eagles forward’s impressive performance in the team’s 5-0 win over Sturm Graz in the UEFA Champions League.
After scoring over the weekend against Napoli, the reigning African Footballer of the Year was rested for the visit of the Austrian side but showcased his quality with the fourth goal after being introduced at halftime.
Lookman headed home in the 90th minute after Juan Cuadrado and De Ketelaere combined to deliver a cross, securing his fourth goal in six games. This brought his season tally to 14 goals in 26 matches across all competitions.
Speaking about his squad rotation, Gasperini acknowledged the difficulty in replacing the Nigerian star.
“We have to be careful because we’re missing a replacement for Lookman and De Ketelaere, unless Zaniolo becomes that type of player. I believe that the attack is fundamental.
“Having players who can come in and be decisive is important. Samardzic is doing well now. It’s a team that can grow,” he said.
