AFCON U-20: Thrilling quarter-final clashes set stage

Quarter-final matches of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations promise a series of thrilling encounters as Africa’s brightest young talents square off in four high-stakes battles today (Monday).

The standout tie features seven-time champions Nigeria facing reigning title holders Senegal in Ismailia—a clash that could determine this year’s frontrunner.

Nigeria, despite a bright start with a 1-0 win over Tunisia, finished second in Group B unbeaten but failed to convince in draws against Morocco and already-eliminated Kenya.

Senegal, meanwhile, secured qualification as Group C runners-up with a decisive 2-0 win over DR Congo on the final day. After a shaky start—drawing with the Central African Republic and losing 1-0 to Ghana—Serigne Saliou Dia’s side regained their form just in time.

Elsewhere, Ghana—one of the tournament’s most consistent teams so far—will face hosts Egypt in Suez. The Black Satellites are the only side to have won all three group matches without conceding a goal, including a statement 1-0 victory over Senegal.

Their opponents, Egypt, have had a turbulent journey to the quarter-finals. The U-20 Pharaohs opened with a win against South Africa but were stunned 4-1 by debutants Sierra Leone.

Morocco, who topped Group B unbeaten—edging Kenya 3-2 and drawing 0-0 with Nigeria before sealing top spot with a commanding 3-1 win over Tunisia—will face surprise package Sierra Leone. The debutants’ fairytale run includes a dominant win over Egypt and narrow progression from a tough Group A.

Rounding off the quarter-final line-up is South Africa versus DR Congo, a clash between two sides that have shown flashes of brilliance but struggled with consistency.
