AFCON: Uganda threatens Nigeria, other Group C opponents

By Tosin Omojola –

Nigeria’s Super Eagles and their other opponents could be in for a difficult time against the Ugandan Cranes when action begins in Group C of the Africa Cup of Nations.

If the words of the Cranes’ skipper, Melvyn Lorenzen, are anything to go by, the trio of Nigeria, Tunisia and Tanzania would need to double their efforts to overcome the East Africans.

In his warning message ahead of the contest in Morocco, the Ugandan national team captain said no team would find it easy playing against his side.

Beaming with confidence about the Cranes’ readiness, Lorenzen stressed that Uganda have consistently held their own against top African sides.

“Even against the big nations, it’s always a good result. We’ve never gone under; the team has always shown itself in a good light.

“So, I think any team that comes won’t be comfortable playing us. It’s time to prove that again,” he said.

The Cranes’ qualification for the Morocco tournament marks their eighth appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations and their first since 2019, with their best outing coming in 1978, when they reached the final but narrowly lost to Ghana.

With renewed belief and growing confidence within the squad, Uganda aim to make a strong impression in Morocco as they prepare to challenge established heavyweights, including Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
