The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Honourable Bukola Olopade as the new Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, described the appointment as timely, well-deserved, and a significant step forward for Nigerian sports.
“This appointment will benefit all stakeholders in sports, drawing from the wealth of experience that will positively impact Nigeria’s sports sector,” Okowa stated.
Okowa, who also serves as the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Vice-President, expressed confidence in the ability of both the NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, and the newly appointed Director-General to position the Commission for success.
“For the first time in a while, we have someone who understands our language. We welcome you to the sports sector—you’re the best thing to happen to Nigerian sports in a long time,” Okowa added.
Honourable Bukola Olopade, a former Commissioner for Sports in Ogun State, is also the current Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the National Sports Festival, scheduled to hold in Ogun State in January 2025.
Olopade is recognized as the organizer of Africa’s largest marathon race and brings extensive experience to his new role, further strengthening the potential of the Nigerian sports sector under his leadership.
