After Kenyans online troll, Obama pays moving tribute to Raila Odinga

Former U.S. President Barack Obama has paid a heartfelt tribute to Kenya’s opposition leader, Raila Odinga, describing him as a “true champion of democracy” who dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom and good governance.
Obama’s statement came just hours after a wave of online trolling from Kenyan social media users who had questioned his silence following Odinga’s passing. Responding with grace and depth, the former president released a moving message celebrating Odinga’s lifelong commitment to democratic ideals.
“Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya,” Obama said. “Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions.”
Obama went on to praise Odinga’s willingness to embrace peaceful reconciliation while holding firm to his principles — a trait he said few leaders anywhere possess.
“Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but for people across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya,” he added.
The tribute has since gone viral, with many Kenyans applauding Obama’s words and sharing memories of the long friendship and political respect between the two figures. For many, the message marked a fitting farewell to a man widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most enduring symbols of democracy.
