Agege LG: Obasa’s son takes charge as Chairman Azeez proceeds on medical leave

Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, has assumed the role of Acting Chairman of Agege Local Government following the medical leave of Hon. Tunde Azeez.

Azeez, who only recently emerged as Council Chairman, has reportedly stepped aside to attend to health-related issues. His decision comes barely a month before his official swearing-in.

In a letter transmitted to the councillors, Azeez formally notified them of his absence and handed over to his deputy, Vinod Obasa, to serve in an acting capacity until his return.

The development did not come as a surprise to many political observers in Agege. During the run-up to the 2025 local government elections, Azeez, then the APC chairmanship candidate, was noticeably absent from campaign activities, leaving much of the mobilization and grassroots engagement to his running mate, Vinod Obasa.

Vinod’s rise to the position of vice chairman had also generated controversy. He was initially tipped to contest the chairmanship outright but was prevailed upon to step down amid public outcry that Speaker Obasa was attempting to install his son as chairman. The compromise saw Vinod become Azeez’s running mate, a move that has now positioned him as Acting Chairman.

Azeez, who is in his late 60s, previously served as APC chairman in Agege Local Government before clinching the council chairmanship seat.

His medical leave, though temporary, has once again stirred political conversation in the area, particularly about the influence of the Obasa political dynasty in Agege politics.
