A’Ibom Gov urges diaspora support for state’s development at AKISAN convention

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has called on indigenes residing abroad to channel their skills and resources toward the development of their homeland. The governor made this appeal during his address at the 2024 Convention of the Akwa Ibom State Association of Nigeria (AKISAN, USA), held at the Sheraton Music City Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.

Governor Eno commended the unity among Akwa Ibom natives across the United States and praised their efforts in promoting the cultural heritage of their state. He expressed gratitude to AKISAN, led by Mr. Itoro Akpan Iquot, for their support during his gubernatorial campaign and their ongoing interest in the state’s affairs.

In his speech, Governor Eno also congratulated Miss Ukeme Awakessien-Jeter on her historic election as Mayor of Upper Arlington City, Ohio, making her the first person of color to hold this position in over a century. He described her as a proud daughter of Nsit Ibom, Akwa Ibom State, and highlighted the collective pride felt by the state’s government and people in her achievement.

The governor emphasized the importance of cooperation between the state government and AKISAN in fostering belief in Akwa Ibom’s potential. He assured the diaspora community of his administration’s commitment to positioning the state as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful, enterprising, and growth-driven regions.

Governor Eno urged Akwa Ibom indigenes to maintain their reputation as ambassadors of the state and to contribute to the realization of the ARISE Agenda, a strategic plan aimed at advancing the state’s development. He highlighted the deep cultural affinity and unity displayed by the diaspora, encouraging them to invest in the state’s growth.

During his address, Governor Eno outlined the achievements of his administration under the ARISE Agenda. He noted the state’s focus on agriculture, designating specific days as “Farm Days” to promote food security. Additionally, he detailed efforts to improve rural development by providing essential services such as potable water, roads, electricity, and healthcare to curb rural-urban migration.

The governor also emphasized the state’s commitment to security, mentioning the establishment of a Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways, led by retired General Koko Essien, to ensure peace and attract investors and tourists to Akwa Ibom.

In the education sector, Governor Eno mentioned the construction of model primary schools in nearly all local government areas, complete with residential quarters for key staff. He also praised the youth of Akwa Ibom for maintaining peace during the nationwide protests that recently swept the country.

Governor Eno reaffirmed his commitment to the security and welfare of all Akwa Ibomites, both at home and abroad, and expressed optimism for the state’s future.
