Air chief commends Akwa Ibom for supporting new air force base

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for donating land for the establishment of a Forward Operational Base (FOB) in the state, aimed at boosting national defence and maritime security in the South-South region.

Air Marshal Abubakar gave the commendation on Wednesday, July 31, 2025, during a courtesy visit to Governor Umo Bassey Eno in Uyo. He described the gesture as pivotal to accelerating the development of operational infrastructure and strengthening air power projection in a region considered critical to national stability.

He noted that the FOB, once operational, would not only enhance security but also position Akwa Ibom as an attractive destination for investment and tourism. “This partnership is about more than air operations,” he said. “It’s about investing in the future of our country and ensuring a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.”

The Air Chief praised the governor’s proactive approach to security, saying it reflects responsible leadership and productive intergovernmental synergy. He also reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) commitment to protecting lives and property across the country, including in Akwa Ibom.

Abubakar said the NAF’s increased presence in the Gulf of Guinea corridor would strengthen existing security structures and help combat maritime threats and transnational crimes that continue to challenge national development.

Governor Eno, in his remarks, expressed appreciation for the visit and pledged continued support for the NAF. He described the Air Chief’s visit as a testament to Akwa Ibom’s growing role in Nigeria’s security architecture and reiterated that safety is a shared responsibility.

As part of the visit, the CAS also paid a courtesy call on His Royal Majesty, Obong Edidem Charles D. Abia, FCA (Attah Ekid Afid), the Paramount Ruler of Eket Local Government Area. There, he emphasized the importance of traditional institutions in maintaining security cooperation and regional harmony.

Obong Abia praised the NAF’s expanding footprint in the region and assured the monarch’s continued support. “Together, we will build bridges of peace, development, and security for the benefit of our people and the progress of Nigeria as a whole,” he said.
