Aiyedatiwa orders intensified action against flooding in Ondo

By Boye Oyeyemi –
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has directed intensified measures to tackle flooding in Ondo State, prompting renewed efforts to address the recurring problem across affected communities. The government has identified faulty culverts, blocked drainage channels and human activities as major causes of the persistent inundation.
Technical Assistant to the Governor on Erosion and Flood Control, Engr. Elisha Ebijimi, disclosed this during an inspection of affected areas, saying the state had returned to critical spots to sustain intervention works which began last year.
Ebijimi explained that the intensified action follows the governor’s directive to safeguard lives and property, especially as the rainy season gathers momentum.
He added that the state is yet to experience flooding despite early rainfall this year, thanks to proactive measures already in place.
The governor’s aide revealed that amphibious machines had been deployed across the state, with units stationed in Ondo town and Odigbo Local Government Area, while Akure South would also benefit from fresh deployment.
The Director of Environment in Ondo West Local Government, Mrs Stella Akinsanmi, attributed previous cases of flooding to illegal structures erected on waterways, particularly around Fagun, which she said obstructed the natural flow of water.
She noted that sensitisation campaigns were ongoing to educate residents on the importance of erecting structures properly.
Residents who spoke during the tour described flooding as a recurring challenge, while commending the government’s intervention and calling for expanded drainage systems and stricter enforcement to ensure the proper disposal of waste.
