Ake to Stockholm: Exhibition to mark 40 years of Soyinka’s Nobel Prize

“Ake to Stockholm”, an archival exhibition tracing Wole Soyinka’s journey from his early years in Abeokuta to winning the Nobel Prize in Literature, will hold in Lagos from November 16 to 29.
The eighth edition of Timeless Memories: Elastic Effects of Wole Soyinka, curated by Oludamola Adebowale, will commemorate the 40th anniversary of Soyinka’s Nobel Prize win in 1986.
According to a report by TheCable lifestyle, the exhibition will take place at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, as part of the 27th Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF), in partnership with the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA).
The programme will feature archival photographs and historical documents, a short documentary film, an illustrated comic book for young readers, an international scholarly panel discussion and a contemporary art exhibition.
Adebowale said the theme would examine the formative experiences and creative influences that shaped Soyinka’s intellectual journey and the significance of his Nobel Prize in the history of African literature.
“The theme, Ake to Stockholm, provides a compelling framework for this year’s programme,” he said.
“It allows us to examine the formative experiences, creative influences and historical circumstances that shaped Soyinka’s intellectual journey, while exploring the significance of the Nobel Prize within the wider history of African literature and global cultural recognition.”
He said the documentary and comic book were designed to make Soyinka’s life and legacy accessible to younger audiences.
