Akinwunmi, NFF vice president guns for Nigeria’s football top job

The first Vice President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Seyi Akinwunmi on Sunday indicated interest to contest for the post of the president of the football ruling body.
Akinwunmi, speaking at a press conference at Alausa, Ikeja, promised to reform the nation’s football if he wins.
He noted that his experience over the years in development of grassroots soccer would be brought to bear in repositioning football to appreciable heights.
He said: “I needed to come and vie for the position not because of ego-centric but because I have prepared for the job. I’m extremely prepared for the job. I’m not sure anybody who is running has same kind of confidence I have.
“As a board member, I take joint responsibility where we may not have done well and also take glory on what we have done well. I apologize to what we did wrong. I believe I can take the football beyond what is it right now.
“To achieve my vision, my action plan is structured across four key growth drivers which are development, the business of football, infrastructure and technology. My desire is to put Nigerian football with any football federation in the world.”
Akinwunmi noted that as chairman of the Lagos State Football Federation, not less than five million youths passed through him.
In his comments, President, Nigerian Referees Association, Tade Azeez said: “Football is one instrument that has brought everybody together in the country. We have gone beyond what anything can just imagine.
“We have added football and education. We are preparing the children from grass to grace.”
Also speaking at the event, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso commended Mr. Akinwunmi over his achievements in grassroots football in the state, noting that his credentials were enough to sell him to emerge as the next NFF president.
He said: “Some people say your credentials are intimidating. It is not intended to intimidate but to show the excellence Lagos is known for. I will want all of you all to support his vision and plans.
“His passion for football is unparalleled, he is somebody that does not discriminate, not just in his credentials but a question of leadership. It is about facing the future by putting the best forward.”
