Akpabio pays tribute to Pope Francis at Vatican

President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has paid a solemn tribute to the late Pope Francis on behalf of President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian people during the Pontiff’s lying-in-state at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Akpabio joined world leaders, dignitaries, and members of the Catholic faithful to pay final respects to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 22, 2025, at the age of 88 following complications related to a prolonged illness. The late Pontiff had served as head of the Catholic Church since 2013 and was widely revered for his humility, progressive reforms, and global outreach.
Speaking briefly after paying his respects, Akpabio described Pope Francis as “a beacon of peace and compassion” and conveyed Nigeria’s condolences to the global Catholic community.
“On behalf of President Tinubu and the entire Nigerian people, I extend our heartfelt sympathies. The world has lost a moral compass, a bridge-builder, and a tireless advocate for the poor and marginalized,” Akpabio said.
The funeral of Pope Francis is scheduled to take place on Saturday, with millions expected to follow the ceremonies across the globe.
