Akpabio reaffirms Senate backing for creation of Anioma State

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed legislative and political support for the creation of Anioma State.

He spoke on Wednesday at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Asaba, Delta State, adding that the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to the initiative.

Akpabio said Warri would serve as the capital of the new Delta State if Anioma is created, noting that the city already has key infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, government offices, major oil companies and a stadium.

Governors of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River, alongside other political leaders and stakeholders from across the region, attended the congress.

He described the agitation for Anioma State as historically justified, adding that it reflects long-standing aspirations rooted in equity, administrative efficiency and balanced development.

The Senate president said the initiative, championed by Ned Nwoko, remains a priority of the 10th Senate and would deliver socio-economic and administrative benefits, including decentralisation.

“Anioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” he said.

Akpabio also urged unity in the South-South region and called on stakeholders to support the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that the proposal has gained significant backing, with 97 senators previously endorsing it.
