Akure airport debunks bandit invasion rumours

By Boye Oyeyemi –

The management of Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu Airport, Akure, has refuted social media claims that bandits had infiltrated the facility, assuring travellers and residents that the airport remains secure.

The false alarm, which spread widely on Facebook, originated from a post by Afenifere chieftain, Prince Eniola Ojajuni, alleging that armed bandits had gained access to the airport.

In response, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adebowale Lawal, led a fact-finding visit to the airport on Monday, accompanied by the ACP (Operations) and other senior officers.

Upon arrival, the Commissioner was received by the Airport Manager, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Adebiyi; Deputy General Manager (Aviation Security); and Airport Chief of Security (ACoS), Mr. Benneth Iwuchukwu, along with key departmental heads.

During the meeting, Mrs. Adebiyi described the viral claim as false and misleading, assuring that no incident of banditry had occurred at the airport.

She explained that the airport’s main security challenge was the occasional incursion of herders and cattle into restricted operational areas. She commended the collaboration of the DPO, Oba-Ile Division, for their role in maintaining airport security.

The Commissioner directed the DPO and airport officials to engage with leaders of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association to prevent future encroachments.

Mrs. Adebiyi concluded, “We wish to assure travellers and residents that Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu Airport is fully secure. The viral post is unfounded, and operations continue as normal.”
