Akwa Ibom: Gov Eno intervenes in Eastern Obolo, SPFL Dispute, advocates peace

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has called for peace between the Eastern Obolo Local Government Area and Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Limited (SPFL), assuring that his administration will work towards an amicable resolution of all lingering disputes.

During a visit to Eastern Obolo and the SPFL facility, Governor Eno announced the formation of a committee comprising government representatives, Eastern Obolo community leaders, SPFL management, and security agencies.

The committee will address key concerns, including Environmental Impact Assessments, the relocation of residents from Obianga and Ikonta, the accurate measurement of land occupied by the company, and other issues aimed at fostering a harmonious relationship.

Stressing the importance of peace, the governor highlighted the mutual benefits for the communities, the state, and the country at large.

He emphasized his administration’s inclusivity and noted various government projects in Eastern Obolo under the “one project per local government” initiative, including road infrastructure and compassionate homes.

“We have come to see the issues firsthand. Akwa Ibom remains one of the most peaceful business environments in Nigeria, and the presence of SPFL here will provide a better future for generations to come,” the governor stated. He urged the community to continue cooperating with SPFL for mutual benefit.

Earlier, Rt. Hon. Samuel Nteogwuijah, Chairman of Eastern Obolo Local Government Area, thanked the governor for prioritizing peace and development in the community.

He assured the state government of the community’s willingness to work with SPFL to ensure sustainable industrial operations in line with best practices.

Hon. Selina Ukpatu, representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State Constituency, expressed optimism that the governor’s intervention would lead to lasting peace, while the Paramount Ruler of Eastern Obolo, HRM Uboon Harry J. Etetor IX, and the Chairman of the Eastern Obolo Host Committee, Professor Gamaliel Harry, pledged their commitment to resolving the issues amicably.

SPFL Managing Director, Mr. Mohit Barot, praised Akwa Ibom’s peaceful business environment, citing it as a key reason for choosing the state for one of the company’s major operational bases.

He assured that SPFL would comply with the government’s directives and improve community relations where necessary.

The governor’s visit is expected to pave the way for peaceful coexistence and the sustainable development of the Eastern Obolo community and the SPFL facility.
