Akwa Ibom governor urges PDP candidates to focus on issue-based campaigns
Ahead of the upcoming local government elections, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has urged chairmanship candidates representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to prioritize issue-based campaigns and emphasize service to the people. He cautioned them against engaging in personal attacks or targeting institutions.
The governor delivered this message during the official launch of the 2024 Local Government campaign and presentation of flags to the 31 chairmanship candidates at the Uyo Township Stadium.
Governor Eno highlighted the accomplishments of the PDP-led government in the state, encouraging the candidates to draw on these achievements in their campaigns. He described them as key representatives of the party’s ARISE Agenda, which focuses on development, peace, security, and good governance.
“You represent the collective symbols of all our past leaders who have, in the last almost 37 years, worked hard to lift our state from a backwater subnational to a destination of choice,” Governor Eno said. He further charged them to “campaign on our sterling record of accomplishments” and promote messages of hope aligned with the ARISE Agenda.
Addressing the issue of local government autonomy, Governor Eno noted that once elected and sworn in, the candidates would have full control over their local government finances. He urged them to embrace accountability and transparency, stressing the importance of rural development as a cornerstone of the ARISE Agenda.
“Upon your successful election, you will be expected to key into this vision and be partners in our collective desire to show that government and governance can be platforms and forces for good,” the governor concluded.
