Akwa Ibom govt, REA sign energy pact to deliver reliable power supply

The Akwa Ibom State Government has reassured residents of improved and reliable electricity supply as it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to fast-track power development across the state.

Governor Umo Eno, speaking at the Akwa Ibom–REA Strategic Roundtable in Abuja on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, declared that the era of energy insecurity in the state is over, stressing that the pact marks a shift from policy formulation to practical implementation.

“We have moved from aspiration to legal and institutional foundation. Today, we pivot to implementation and delivery,” the governor said.

Eno noted that within the past year, his administration had delivered the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Policy (2024), enacted the Electricity Law (2025), and created regulatory frameworks to attract investors and drive execution.

He emphasised that electricity is central to the state’s ARISE Agenda, which focuses on agriculture, industry, education, healthcare, digital hubs, women-led enterprises, and job creation. He also assured investors of land provision, regulatory clarity, expedited permits, and financing support.

Deputy Governor, Dr. Akon Eyakenyi, described the event as a “critical milestone” toward universal electricity access, stressing that off-grid solutions are vital to reaching unserved and underserved communities.

REA Managing Director, Aliyu Baba, praised Governor Eno’s commitment to rural development, pledging continued collaboration with the state to attract private sector investors and ensure affordable electricity for residents.

The roundtable featured presentations on renewable energy opportunities, the unveiling of the REA Community Mapping Tool, and the formal signing of the MoU, witnessed by top government officials and development partners.
