Akwa Ibom launches first international flight route linking Uyo to Accra

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has announced the commencement of international flight operations between Uyo and Accra, describing the development as a significant milestone for economic growth and regional connectivity.

The governor disclosed this on Sunday after returning from the inaugural flight, noting that the new route is expected to boost tourism, trade, and investment opportunities in the state.

He said the development positions Uyo as an emerging hub for business and international engagements within the West African sub-region.

“This will open up more opportunities in tourism, trade, and investment, and make it easier for us to connect with other countries within the sub-region,” he said.

Eno explained that the flight connection would ease movement between countries in the region and create more opportunities for investors and travellers.

To further strengthen the aviation sector, the governor revealed plans to establish a dedicated Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development to oversee the state’s aviation infrastructure. He added that Engr. Uwem Ekanem has been assigned to supervise the new ministry pending the appointment of a substantive commissioner.

The governor also announced plans to expand the fleet of the state-owned airline, Ibom Air, with the addition of a new Airbus A220 aircraft expected to arrive in June.

Eno acknowledged the support of the Federal Government, including President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, as well as the contributions of previous administrations in achieving the milestone.
