Akwa Ibom launches public-private security trust fund to improve community safety

Akwa Ibom State has launched the Akwa Ibom State Security Trust Fund (AKSTF), a public-private partnership aimed at sustaining the state’s reputation as one of the safest in Nigeria. The official launch took place at the Government House Banquet Hall, Uyo, where Governor Pastor Umo Eno emphasized that security is a shared responsibility between government, private sector, and citizens.

While security remains the primary duty of government, Governor Eno stressed the importance of collaboration with private entities and individuals to maintain peace and create a secure environment for economic and social development. He commended past leaders for their commitment to peace and pledged to build on their legacy.

To strengthen security infrastructure, the Governor announced the creation of the Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways, as well as the Ibom Community Watch — a grassroots intelligence initiative supporting official security agencies. He thanked security agencies for their cooperation, which has helped Akwa Ibom remain one of the safest states.

Governor Eno also requested the establishment of a military formation along the maritime corridor in Oron to enhance security. This appeal was recently submitted to the Chief of Army Staff. He expressed gratitude to former Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba (Rtd.), who chaired the event, and current IGP Kayode Egbetokun for their ongoing support.

IGP Usman Alkali Baba praised Governor Eno’s humility and dedication, coining “UmoEnoism” to describe his governance style. He highlighted the importance of citizen involvement in security and called for transparency and efficiency in managing the trust fund, expressing confidence in the appointed board.

The Commissioner for Internal Security and Waterways, Gen. Koko Essien (retd.), underscored Akwa Ibom’s strategic position with Nigeria’s longest coastline and borders with Imo and Cross Rivers, making it vulnerable to maritime crimes. He outlined plans to reorganize security teams and use the trust fund to acquire patrol vehicles, communication gadgets, surveillance tools, enhanced gunboats, specialized training, and implement the Safe City initiative.

Through the State Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, IGP Kayode Egbetokun described the trust fund as a visionary step and pledged police support to maintain Akwa Ibom’s peaceful status. He also encouraged active citizen participation in security management.

The Chairman of the Trust Fund, Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN, explained the need for a public-private partnership to address security challenges collaboratively. He praised Governor Eno’s efforts to sustain peace and assured that the fund would be professionally managed to maximize its impact. The launch, themed “Partnership for a Safer Akwa Ibom,” was attended by the Deputy Governor, Speaker of the House, senators, and key corporate stakeholders.
