The Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has described his predecessor, Lamidi Adeyemi III, as a towering figure in Yoruba history as he marked the fourth anniversary of his passing.
In a statement issued on Wednesday through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the monarch said the late Alaafin remained an enduring symbol of wisdom, humility, and cultural preservation throughout his reign.
Oba Adeyemi III died on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83, after a reign widely regarded as one of the longest and most influential in modern Oyo history.
Reflecting on his legacy, Oba Owoade noted that the late monarch played a significant role in promoting unity, peace, and stability within the Yoruba nation and across Nigeria.
He added that the former Alaafin deployed his position to advance dialogue and foster national cohesion during critical moments in the country’s history.
The monarch further described Oba Adeyemi III as a respected historian and eloquent custodian of tradition, whose deep knowledge of Yoruba and global history distinguished his public engagements.
According to him, the late ruler successfully balanced cultural preservation with modernisation, while strengthening the relevance of traditional institutions in contemporary governance.
Oba Owoade also highlighted his predecessor’s contributions to education, philanthropy, and mentorship, noting that his enduring legacy as a bridge-builder and advocate of peace continues to inspire traditional leadership in Nigeria.
